Disclosure: I received Mr. D Math ASL I from Mr. D Math for free, and was compensated for my time. I was not required to give a positive review. All opinions are 100% my own.

Self-Paced American Sign Language (ASL I) from Mr. D Math

Let’s jump into the ‘way back’ machine! ‘Way back’ before we ever knew we would homeschool, I taught my children sign language. So, since the very early learning years, American Sign Language (ASL) has been a part of our family.    But, in the beginning, it was for a very different reason than the reasons we chose the self-paced ASL I course from Mr. D Math this year.

You see, as a toddler, my daughter was very frustrated. She had so many ideas and questions she wanted to communicate about but did not have the words yet.  In order to help increase her vocabulary in a fun way, we began incorporating American Sign Language (ASL) into our everyday activities.  It was so fun watching her learn new words with her hands. She was elated when she could ask a question or communicate a need with her hands and we would understand.  Her frustration diminished so dramatically as did the toddler tantrums.

Now, fast forward to highschool …. Here we are looking for an additional elective that would be fun to add to the school year and we stumble across Mr. D Math’s self-paced courses.  Immediately she decides to do the self-paced ASL course.  In her words, “I wanted to take ASL I because I remember using it as a little kid and I thought it would be fun to begin learning it again for highschool credit.”

Self-Paced Electives For A Digital Homeschool

It has been a perfect match! The self-paced class allows students to participate without attending in-person or even live, online classes. The entire class takes place via video stream. To turn in homework, students simply upload it to the class platform.  The best parts, according to my daughter, about the Mr. D Math ASL I self-paced course are:

  • It lets me go as fast or slow as I need to for each week’s lessons.
  • There are videos so I can rewatch them as many times as I like.
  • The video homework assignments are a great idea because it makes sense for a visual language like ASL to actually be able to check your work and progress.

So, after a student submits class assignments and quizzes, they are reviewed by the instructor. This allows for communication if improvements are needed or there are questions.  We are thrilled to be using Mr. D Math ASL I to rekindle the love of sign language in our homeschool in a way that fits our digital lifestyle.

The ASL I self-paced class offered by Mr. D Math has 4 different classes to choose from, so if your student is passionate about ASL, they will really enjoy the various classes offered and be able to find the perfect fit for their skill level.

  • ELEMENTARY ASL – Students will learn signs that will allow them to participate in basic signing conversations using worksheets, coloring pages, games, and fun activities.
  • ASL I:  BEGINNER AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE – Students will learn over 200 signs allowing them to participate in basic signing conversations. They will also learn the grammar and sentence structure of ASL, as well as learn the history of Deaf culture and etiquette when conversing with a Deaf person.
  • ASL II:  INTERMEDIATE AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE – Students will build upon the skills they learned in ASL II, by increasing their signing vocabulary; practicing their perceptive skills (seeing a sign and knowing what it means), and using their receptive skills with more “hands up” assignments. They will also continue to learn about Deaf culture and the Deaf community through their homework and practice with guest lecturers who are deaf.  (prerequisite: ASL II)
  • ASL III: ADVANCED AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE – After completing ASL I & II, students may want to consider the ASL III course. This course is for students who have a passionate interest in ASL; either as a possible future career or just out of the love of learning it! The students will learn more signs to allow them to converse at a higher level. (prerequisite: ASL I & ASL II)
