Shopping In Italy – Viterbo Like A Local

Shopping in Italy can be expensive, habit-forming and exhausting. If you have kids in tow, then just up all that by 10x and you’ll understand why heading to a smaller city for shopping while you travel with kids is the best for your itinerary and your sanity.

Viterbo’s shopping is lovely! It falls somewhere between posh and artsy but definitely has an affordable side as well. You’ll love it! There are a number of streets leading away from Piazza Della Morte that have outstanding local and high end (posh) shops. There are some outrageously, creative, designer seamstresses in this area! Check ‘em out if you are looking for something really unique to take home. There are also some great artisan shops for ceramics, foodie gifts and jewelry.  Something for everyone!

Favorite Places In Viterbo For Shopping In Italy

Here’s my Viterbo shopping shortlist:

  • Any street off of Piazza Della Morte (AKA free WiFi Piazza to the locals).
  • Open-air street market on Saturday mornings in Piazza San Faustino (a 2-minute walk from the Etruscan Museum).
  • Check out the stalls at the street market that have second-hand items for 1-3 euros. You never know what you’ll find!

Make Friends With The Locals

I found some great ceramic gifts in an artisan shop. After I chatted for a few minutes using my bad Italian and trying to understand her tourist English, I made my purchase.  To my surprise, she invited me down to the cantina (cellar).

Admittedly, I was a bit nervous. I wasn’t quite sure where we were going or why. Ultimately, she was an artist and she wanted to show off her work. Lost in translation was her invitation to see the exhibit of her more expensive ceramics and a presepi (Italian-style nativity scene) she had handcrafted and displayed in the cantina. Priceless memory! I’m pretty sure we were the highlight of each other’s day.

Affordable Shopping in Viterbo, Italy

If your budget is like mine and you are in Viterbo on a Saturday morning, make sure you head to the street market and hang out with the locals! Italian street markets are so much fun. From the food stalls to the housewares, clothing, and even the thrift store/charity shop stalls that have things for 1-3 Euro! Everyone will find something they like at a price they can afford. I really love shopping in Viterbo.

With Viterbo as your home base, all roads lead to…family fun in and around Rome. Sometimes you just gotta go for it and let the locals show you the best spots for shopping in Italy. Maybe you need to divide and conquer – some go shopping and some enjoy an adventure. Whatever you do, make a memory and have fun learning on location!

Stay Captivated!

That’s it!  Another one of Viterbo’s must-see sights for traveling (and shopping) with kids is in the bag. It’s super kid-friendly. You could easily enjoy Viterbo for a weekend. A week is perfect to take in all the sights, sounds, and tastes of the Tuscia region. • It’s really fun shopping. Perfect for families. Between the street market and the fun shops, book stores and semi-upscale “high street”. It just so fun. I think you’d love Viterbo.
