The Victorian era in England was marked by the reign of Queen Victoria, 1837-1901.  Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth, England in 1812 – the year Great Britain entered into conflict with the United States near the end of the Napoleonic Wars.  It was a dramatic time in history and would become the backdrop of so many of Charles Dickens’ books, poems, and short stories.
